Apple has finally done it. Apple has released its new tablet device, that is. The Mac public was expecting, indeed clamoring -- for Apple to release such a device -- and soon! For Apple to have failed to do so would have been a major letdown (to its customers as well as its stockholders). The momentum was just impossible to resist.

After all, the iPhone is essentially a miniature tablet computer. Apple has shown that it can "do" such a device like no one else. So, despite Steve Jobs past protestations, releasing a new tablet was a no-brainer. All Apple had to do is scale up its brilliant interface to a larger device.

Did I say "all Apple had to do?" The technical challenges in producing this new device, called the iPad, were enormous. Apple had to essentially design a whole new operating system that is not quite the Mac and not quite the iPhone, rewrite its core applications from scratch, and basically rethink the entire way a computer operates.

Apple was not the first to release a new tablet computer, just as it was not the first to release an MP3 player or cell phone, but it may well be the company that succeeds in making the tablet computer truly "catch fire" with the public.

Apple has a tremendous head start with 140,000+ apps for the iPhone, and it wisely designed the iPad to take advantage of them. The iPad can run iPhone apps at their original size, or in "pixel doubled mode" twice the size as on the iPhone, so that they nearly fill the iPad screen. Developers can easily rewrite their iPhone apps specifically for the iPad in such a way as to take advantage of its new features.

How will the iPad affect Internet marketers? Of course, the "i" in its name stands for Internet (and it's also a clever play on the name of the "iPod"). Surfing the web will be a joy, and a larger screen will give users much more room to work with. Apple's developers brag that it's like "holding the entire Internet in your hand," or like reading a physical book or magazine.

Creation of new apps for the iPad by developers could rival the gold rush that sprang up around the iPhone. This brings us to the onscreen keyboard. Many pundits wondered how text entry would work on Apple's new tablet device. You can use an external keyboard for typing long documents if you wish. However, I think Apple made the right decision in not attempting to build a physical keyboard into the tablet. The goal of the iPad is to bring your data and web surfing up close for an intimate feel. A keypad would simply get between you and the screen.

The on-screen keyboard is much larger, of course, than what is possible on the iPhone. In landscape mode, the keyboard is almost as large as that on a standard laptop. With just a few tweaks to the word recognition and auto-correction features of the iPhone software, typing on this virtual keyboard, I suspect, could be almost as fast as using a real one. Plus, I believe that voice dictation apps could come quickly to the iPad, just as they have to the iPhone.

And, of course, the iPad includes all of the same features as the iPhone, only in a larger form--video, YouTube, the iPod and iTunes, interactive satellite maps, the notepad, a calendar completely redesigned from the ground up for the iPad, Contacts and Spotlight search.

The iPad will be shipped in three different internal storage configurations and with the option of Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G, for a total of six different models. The base model, the 16 GB Wi-Fi only, will start at a reasonable $499, while the top of the line 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G model will tip the scales at a still affordable $829. Apple has said that, while most new technologies are introduced at a higher price point and slowly work their way down, Apple wanted to do things differently.

When will the iPad be available? Apple expects the Wi-Fi models to ship in late March and the 3G models to ship in April.

The thinness, just 0.5 inches, the light weight, just 1.5 pounds, and the flexibility of this new device are sure to make the iPad popular with Internet marketers and anyone on the go. With its high resolution LED backlight, it's larger display, it's responsive multi-touch screen and its powerful Apple-designed processor, the new iPad will be thin and light enough to take anywhere. During the format war over high-definition optical discs, Blu-ray Disc competed with the HD DVD format. However, on February 19, 2008, Toshiba (the main company supporting HD DVD) announced that it would no longer develop, manufacture, or market HD DVD players and recorders, leading almost all other HD DVD businesses to follow suit, and thus effectively ending the format war. Blu -ray is currently supported by about 200 of the world's leading pc, consumer electronics, recording media, music and video game companies. The format has the benefit of support from all Hollywood studios and other smaller studios as being a successor to the current DVD format. Major blank media producers such as TDK also support the Blu-ray Disc format as the successor to DVD.

Blu-ray provides some of the strongest copy protection methods ever developed for any consumer format, which makes it the best option for any content publisher wanting assurance that their valuable assets are protected from piracy. Resurrect Old Laptops (And Desktop PCs) With Linux

A customer came to me with a low-mileage 1999 vintage laptop which she wished to use for occasional web browsing. (Laptop specs: Dell Inspiron 3500. 333 MHz CPU, 64 MB Ram, 4.7 GB disk. Every spec was about one-tenth of today's PCs!). It was running Windows 98 Second Edition. Microsoft stopped providing Windows 98 updates years ago, and Windows 98 is now very vulnerable to attack. Worse, today's anti-virus and anti-spyware programs won't run on it. Shouldn't she just scrap the laptop?

Since the laptop was in like-new condition, we decided to extend its life by injecting some 21st century blood into it. We topped up its memory slots with the maximum RAM (a mere 256 MB!) and replaced Windows 98 with Xubuntu 8.10. It's not Microsoft Windows, but to a user it appears similar, and includes a word processor, spreadsheet, graphics / photo editor, and Mozilla Firefox web browser. I've not been able to get its onboard soundcard to work, but everything else works. There are three big upsides to any Linux-based desktop operating system when compared to MS Windows:

* It frees the user from constantly worrying about Windows Updates to patch vulnerabilties
* No anti-virus or anti-spyware programs are needed (Yay! )
* There are no Windows licensing headaches.

A potential downside is that Windows applications won't run on Linux without the assistance of either Wine or running a copy of Windows XP within a virtual machine. If you have a tired desktop or laptop PC -- especially one without a legitimate Windows license -- consider breathing new life into it with some form of Linux.

Most are available for free, such as http://www.xubuntu.org/ I tried Damn Small Linux (too minimal for this case), Puppy Linux (it was okay, but just barely), and Xubuntu 8.04, 8.10, and 9.04. Xubuntu 9.04 added some features but did something to slow response to user inputs. I settled on Xubuntu 8.10. (Xubuntu imposes a lighter load on the hardware than Ubuntu because it has a leaner desktop.) You can first just boot with the Xubuntu (or Ubuntu) Live CD, to see whether it's acceptable and runs okay on your hardware. (Of course it'll be slow when booting off the CD-ROM drive.) If so, you can install it on your hard drive from the same CD-ROM. Oh -- one caveat: Xubuntu and its siblings may not install without problems on all hardware. I'm now fighting to get it to install on a 1.1 GHz AMD Athlon desktop PC -- I have no idea why it won't install on this system, yet it installed with almost no problems on the old laptop. One of the most complicated decisions to make for an IT department concerns the architecture for a multi-site voice/data network. Should the network be based on simple T1 point-to-point bandwidth circuits? How about burstable DS3 bandwidth or maybe a single OC3 bandwidth cloud? No matter the bandwidth chosen .... the most efficient design should base the communication backbone on a MPLS configuration (Multi-Protocol Label Switching).

To get there, first and foremost in deciding about the WAN architecture of any organization communication network you must determine ....

- How many locations you would like to connect?

- Architecture - hub and spoke or mesh architecture?

- What applications would be run on this network .... Voice, Video, Data, all of the above?

- Precisely which applications will be run in case of Data?

- What will be the % each will take up of your QoS, the total of all three should be 100%?

- Voice is the premium level QoS and hence the most expensive as it is a real time communication, followed by video and then data.

- How many users precisely will be using the network at a given point of time at each location?

- What will be the concurrency factor? Are you are looking for 100% concurrency or you can manage with lesser concurrency?

- What is the scope of scalability at each location and hub location?

- Will the access to internet also be given to users?

- Internet at a central location can help you in implementing and enforcing various security policies of your organization.

- Do you want to give access to the network resources to a mobile user?

The answer to all these questions will help in arriving at the MPLS bandwidth required at each hub and spoke location.

Honestly speaking no organization should ideally try to do this calculation themselves. Instead they can hire a consultant or a telecom service provider to do this activity as they are experts in designing this solution. With their help you can easily decide upon the bandwidth for each location, select suitable router, make redundancy plans, routing the traffic on Atlantic or pacific routes, blah blah.

Yes, another Acer. You can tell that I fell in love with this brand pretty quickly. This model is actually the one I finally decided to buy for my father. It comes with:

-and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

The price is slightly higher than the other Acer listed, but the upgrade was well worth it for me. My father went from having a dinosaur to having a computer twice as good as mine!

This is actually the computer I've been eyeing for myself recently (Don't tell my dad). A few months ago a friend of mine got one and every time I go to her place I ask to use it! It's quite a joy. How to Create a Letter With Microsoft Word Processor in XP Or Vista

To make a letter the most basic use of a word processor, Open your word processor by finding the icon, or looking for word processor in your programs. Once you find the word processor (usually located on the desktop) open the program.

Once you have opened the program open the word file, and choose the letter document, and then a letter wizard should open. Once it opens you can choose the letter style, and then the letter wizard will open.

When the letter wizard opens fill out all the formalities such as who it is to, from, date, etcetera. The wizard will then close. You will see where to place the body of your letter. Look for an insert key on your computer then press it, and use your mouse to put the pointer in front of the point where you wish to start your letter, just start typing until your done. Then hit insert again to turn it off. Then go through the grammar and spelling by pointing at each word that is highlighted and right click. A box will then come up that will show you how to correct your errors. In addition you can go to tools, and find your thesaurus if you need it.

To keep your letter from being generic, there is a tool bar at the top of the page with a lot of options to spruce up your letter. After you have finished your letter, you can put the pointer at the top of the document by holding ctrl and home at the same time. Then click the left side of your mouse, and click and hold and drag to the end of the document until it is all highlighted in black. To change your font (letter style) you can go to formant at the top of the page, and choose the font and size you like.

If you want your paragraphs indented, then you will choose format paragraph, and this will make your indentations, and line spacing which is to decide if you want one or two lines between the end of each sentence. If you want to put bullets , to make a point highlight the area and go to format bullets.

To insert your date, just go to insert and choose insert date. If you wish to insert a picture go to insert picture, and insert the object or clip art. To underline you can highlight a word then choose the u with the underline at the top of the page and underline the specific words. The same goes for making some letters bold, aligning your letter, and numbering.

You can also add some fancy letters by going to insert artwork, highlight and choose the one you like and put your letters or words you want to add into your letter. If you do not like the artwork then highlight and choose the delete key on the computer to take it off the page.

Some key shortcuts are ctrl, home takes you home. ctrl end takes you to the end of a page. you have page up and down as well. alt s will save you progress. It is best to save to documents when finished until you get to know your computer pretty well. When you press ctrl and s at the same time a box will come up for you to name your letter. If you wish to print go to file print, If you wish to email go to file and send. When your satisfied your done. Then just click on the x in the upper right corner and close it.

Windows XP has a Disk Cleanup tool that automates cleaning up the hard drive. Using Disk Cleanup you can empty the Recycle Bin and remove these items from your system:

Memory and Vista - Why My Laptop Needs Four GB of Memory

I thought when buying a brand new Dell laptop with 1GB of memory installed there would be absolutely no issues. There is half the memory installed on my Windows XP machine and it works great! Well, there is an OS called Microsoft Vista and it is an absolute memory HOG!

If you like many others use Firefox, seriously consider getting more memory. Firefox is a great browser and I use it every day, but with greatness comes a price. Firefox requires much memory for its tabbed browsing especially if you are running Vista.

Prior to getting a 3 GB memory upgrade, my laptop would constantly freeze. Most of the time I was using Firefox and although a reboot was not usually necessary, it was still annoying having to force quit Firefox every hour.

At 1GB, my memory usage was hanging around 89%. This means that 11% of the memory was available with only Firefox open. The computer would go nuts because there was not enough free memory for Vista to do what it had to.

If you want to see what your memory usage is, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press delete. Then click on the last menu item called "Task Manager". On the bottom right of the window, you see "Physical Memory" along with a number. This number is a percentage of how much memory your computer is using in real time. If it's anything over 65% with minimal programs open, consider upgrading your memory.

Most laptops with a 32bit operating system will accept up to 4GB of memory. If you are running a 64bit OS, you can install up to 8GB of memory. I purchased (2) 2GB memory sticks for under $45. It was definitely worth it!

The History of Laptop Computers

Have you ever wondered where the sleek new portable PCs of today came from? How did they get so small, and so fast? It's true that modern notebook computers have undergone many changes throughout the years.

In this article I will attempt to put together a rough history and timeline based on the laptop computer. I say rough because no one can really put a finger on who developed the first mobile computer. Anyways, let's get started!

Computer buffs may not know who created the first laptop, but most will agree that Alan Kay of the Xerox Palo Alto research center was the first to come up with the idea of the portable PC in the 1970s. Kay envisioned a portable computer much like the ones found today. Something small and lightweight that anyone could afford.

Some say that the first notebook that was actually built in 1979 by William Moggridge who was with Grid Systems Corp. It featured 340 kilobytes of memory, a folding screen, and was made of metal (magnesium). This was hardly like the laptop computers found today, but it was a start.

Arguably, the next mobile computer produced was in 1983 by Gavilan Computers. This laptop featured 64 128 megabytes of memory, a touchpad mouse, and even a portable printer. Weighing in at 9 pounds without the printer, this computer was actually only a few pounds heavier than notebooks found today.

Gavilan later failed largely due to their computer being incompatible with other computers. Mainly because the Gavilan laptop used their own operating system.

Apple Computers introduced the apple IIc model in 1984, but it wasn't all that much better than what Gavilan had produced a year earlier. It did feature an optional LCD panel which had on impact on later notebooks.

Finally in 1986 a true laptop was created by IBM called the IBM PC Convertible. I say true because unlike a few of the others, this laptop didn't have to be setup everywhere. And unlike the others it featured two modern 3.5 inch floppy drives, and space for an internal modem! Also found on the Convertible was an LCD screen and basic applications the user could use to create word documents, and schedule appointments.

Maybe most interesting was that the IBM PC Convertible sold for $3500! Of course you would be hard pressed to find that price tag on any laptop these days(They have gone way down).

Since the late 80s many manufacturers have come forward to produce new machines that are even faster and more powerful than their previous counterparts. These days the buyer has a lot of choice, and laptops are faster than ever.

Netbooks are everywhere, on buses, on trains, on planes... and in the classroom. It seems the little netbook has come out of nowhere to become extremely popular overnight.

But what is a netbook?

Netbooks usually have screens of 10 inches or less, runs Windows or Linux and generally sell for well under $500. As its name indicates, the netbook's main purpose is to keep its owner conveniently connected to the net - anywhere, anytime.

First introduced by Asustek when it launched the first Eee PC in the fall of 2007. But it was only in the last year when we saw the explosive growth of these so-called mini-laptops. Now we have many computer companies such as HP, Dell, Lenovo... all jumping on this craze for a small portable laptop. So much so, that netbooks now is the fastest growing segment of the laptop industry and is expected to reach 139 million units by 2013.

Why is there a sudden popularity for the small netbook? Perhaps the answer lies mainly in our constant quest for mobility. We want a portable device that will keep us connected to the Internet and yet be small and light enough to be carried around all day. A truly ultra-portable device that keeps us connected with family, friends and the web.

The next question you have to ask: why do netbooks make for great student laptops? If the above reasons aren't enough, try the following:

Size

Netbooks are small with 10 inch displays or less, which make them ideal for students. Plus, they are usually very lightweight -- around 2 or 3 pounds. They are compact enough to tuck into your school bag or backpack, and small enough to carry around all day without developing a hernia.

Portability

As mentioned above because the netbook is so small and compact, it is very portable. A very mobile device that we can use to stay connected to the web and friends. Connectability is one of the main features -- you are connected to the web at all times.

Sturdiness

Most netbooks are designed to be sturdy and tough. They can take a few hard knocks and still keep on working. Students are not exactly the most gentle creatures on the planet, so a sturdy tough machine is needed to handle the demands put upon it.

Battery Life

Because of their small size, you will usually get better battery life than with a regular sized laptop. This is important to the student since you may have to go all day without a chance to re-charge the battery. Long lasting battery life makes the netbook the perfect student laptop.

Performance

Although small, these mini-laptops still sports some very impressive specs. Many now come with at least 1 Gig of RAM and Intel Atom processors. There are even some with Solid State Hard Drives which make them more durable and less likely to be damaged. Most use Windows XP but newer models debuting this year with the Nvidia's Ion platform may have Vista or Windows 7, but still don't expect the kind of performance you would get from a regular laptop.

Storage

While storage on netbooks is constantly increasing, it is still nowhere near the kind of storage you will find on a regular sized laptop. Usually, most devices have around 30 or 60 Gig hard drives which should be adequate for most student's needs. Many newer netbooks have 160 Gigs of storage.

Price

Perhaps, the main reason netbooks make the perfect student laptops is the low price. Students are usually on a very limited budget and the low price-tag is a perfect fit. Many perfectly adequate machines are now priced in the $300 to $500 range -- while many good ones go for well under $300. Plus, prices are steadily dropping so almost any student can now afford a netbook.

As you can plainly see, the netbook does have many features to make it a perfect student laptop: small size, very portable, excellent connections, very sturdy, long battery life, good performance, adequate storage and most of all, a very affordable price almost any student can take advantage of. Overall, netbooks are well suited for the classroom and the student.

3. Classified Ads can be a good place to search for laptop spares or repairs it maybe best to stick with your local area to save on delivery.
4. If you are more serious about doing this you could place a wanted ad in your local paper classified section. Where you will get calls from people trying to sell there laptops. You must be sure about exactly what you want and what you are willing to pay for these bits.

Windows XP Safe Mode was designed to help users troubleshoot boot up and system issues. There are actually three versions of Safe Mode. Depending on your problem, you may choose one over another. Safe Mode essentially boots up your computer with minimal functionality, not loading all the different drivers or system functions to allow you to make changes.

If your computer fails to boot up, gives you an error message, or just hangs, the first step in troubleshooting is to try to get into Safe Mode. When your computer is booting up, if you press the F8 key, you will be shown the Windows Advanced Options Menu. The first three options are your Safe Modes:

Safe Mode –

The most basic version, nothing lodes but the bare minimum processes

Safe Mode With Networking –

This version allows network access and the Internet if connected

Safe Mode With Command Prompt –

This version will put you into the MSDOS mode at a command line

The primary purpose of Safe Mode is to bypass boot issues with startup applications, video or other hardware drivers, and malware or spyware. You can change settings to stop these offending applications or drivers from loading, erase files that would normally be in use (if the file is open it is normally locked and you can’t delete it), or make system changes.

When Windows XP was first released, Safe Mode was designed to deal with video issues and other hardware drivers. Safe Mode uses the most basic video settings (640 X 480 and 16 colors) and a generic VGA.sys driver.
The first choice also loads the minimum system processes which also may eliminate startup application problems. *If you still can’t boot into Safe Mode you probably have issues with your primary boot files, and you should use the Recovery Console to address any file replacement.

If you need to access updated or new versions of hardware drivers, the second Safe Mode option will allow you to connect to the Internet to download and install these files. This may also be a good choice if you have some malware or adware on your system that prevents you (when booting normally and starting the offending program) accessing the anti virus or malware software to remove these programs. One of the favorite tricks these programs do is to prevent you from accessing any software known to remove them.

The third choice of Safe Mode, which boots you to an MSDOS Prompt, allows you to run utilities in MSDOS mode. Most of the advanced system adjustments and programs designed to run diagnostics will run in this mode. Since many of the major system files are not loaded, you can delete and replace this files in MSDOS.

Warning, if you have a USB mouse and keyboard, Safe Mode will not load USB device drivers. If you have a newer computer (say 2007 and forward), your computer bios may have the ability to mount any USB devices automatically. If your computer came with a USB mouse and keyboard, that’s a good indication your bios will perform the auto load function for USB devices. You can go into your bios setting make sure USB legacy is enabled. Or you can borrow a standard mouse and keyboard if that option is not available.

You can also access a utility called MSCONFIG from the start menu in Safe Mode using the run command. MSCONFIG has the ability to run in diagnostic startup (only loads minimal processes) or selective startup. This can be helpful to get you to be able to boot up in normal mode. And that means if you have not backed up important data files, do it first. Current backups give you the absolute best fall back position. Make sure you have a current backup of any essential data files before doing anything else. That’s your first priority.

Once you have a current backup, you can try the following methods to get your computer back up and running in normal mode.

If you know where the offending files are of any malware or adware, you can easily delete them to stop the automatic loading when your computer boots up. You need to be careful when deleting files in MSDOS mode, if you accidentally delete a required file for booting or running critical system processes, your computer may not reboot. Always exercise caution and be sure you know that the file you are deleting is not a system file.

Many times if you simply start your computer in Safe Mode and then reboot loading problems can be eliminated. I cannot tell you why, only that it works about 25 of the time. If there is a file that may not have closed properly or got out of the proper boot sequence, Windows XP does a clean boot from Safe Mode and that may be why it corrects minor boot issues.

One of the often over looked quick fixes in Safe Mode is to do a System Restore. System Restore is a utility under System Tools. If you click on start, all programs, Accessories, then System Tools you will see the System Restore selection. You want to pick a Restore Point that is well before the time your current problems started. If some renegade software has been installed, it will restore your computer back to a point before this install.

You should also run any ant virus, malware or adware, or root kit removal software whenever possible from Safe Mode. This keeps the offending software from preventing or stopping any removal activity. Many of the newer versions of these rogue programs have a self protecting feature that may prevent removal software from running in normal mode.

Windows XP Safe Mode can help you resolve many boot up problems. Always boot up in Safe Mode first and try to determine if your problem is with any boot files or device drivers. It’s the best first step in troubleshooting any boot issues.

So, you have been wondering how to clean your LCD monitor screen but don't know how to do it.
